"What is Unobtainium anyway?" →
everythinginthesky: Neatorama has some problems with ‘Avatar’ and proposes a theory as to how to explain some of its plot-holes. “Unobtainium is a humorous name for any extremely rare, costly, or physically impossible material needed to fulfill a given design for a given application.” That’s it: it means it’s an impossible-to-get-at substance. And no, for those of you that are asking that...

…I think things like “This album is pretty average, there are only one or two good songs, maybe three if you drop your standards.” Then I think to myself “Well it’s not like you could even make one of the average songs, so just shut up and enjoy it for what it is.”

A century of racing fashion →
Interesting photo essay about Australian racing fashion (only womens’ fashion, AS USUAL).  If you’re not too interested, you’ve at least got to hold out until the 1970s and 80s. I guess if peer pressure can make us subject a screaming man to ever increasing electric shocks, then it can make us wear horrible attire.

Under rules aimed at bringing order to Rio’s famous beaches, ball games are among the undesirable activities being curtailed or banned as the city that will host a World Cup and Olympics within seven years seeks to clean up its act…. Rio state this month hired former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who takes credit for cleaning up the Big Apple, to help advise it on the Brazilian...

I like Natalie Portman in Garden State. I like Zoey Deschanel in Yes Man.  I like Audrey Tautou in Amélie.  Who knows, maybe I almost love them. They are quirky, cute and they enjoy life.  I like that.  They share with me a sense of humour I am not often able to display as a responsible adult with interests in organisational behaviour, federal politics and world news.  I like meeting people I...

The Gurkhas of Helmand province (WIRED Magazine). →
Anup Kaphle recently traveled to Afghanistan’s Helmand Province to follow the soldiers of the Royal Gurkha Rifles. These young men, mostly from rural Nepal, have long been recruited for service in the British army; Kaphle followed them as they worked as trainers and mentors for the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police. Kaphle perhaps overstates the cultural bond between the Gurkhas and...

Who came up with the idea that 'Avatar' is the...
I’ve heard this ‘fact’ floated a couple of times, most recently here by Karl Quinn in The Age.  From what I understand though, that is false.  WIRED reported that the agreed upon budget was $195 million.  Wikipedia reports (through The Wrap) that the cost was $237 million, with $150 million for marketing.  WIRED is probably correct that the initial budget was $195m because it...

I asked Michael Yon what camera he would recommend
He said the Canon 5D Mark II was his favourite.  It’s pretty pricey though.  I found one site that was selling the body (i.e. no lens) for more than $3,000, and that was supposedly with a discount.  Given that Michael Yon is an (excellent) independent war journalist, I think his recommendation would have to be pretty robust though. I recently reflected on some tumblr discussion that said if...

Atheism is about being proud to say "I don't know"
chapfou: I don’t know. anotherangle: exactly!!! xntrek: Actually … Agnosticism is about being comfortable to say I don’t know.  Atheism is about being comfortable to say I don’t believe. indefensible: I’m a strong atheist and I find agnostics almost belligerently tedious.
